Back in the eighties, businessman George Doran wrote a paper that became famous for creating the SMART goals acronym:

Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Realistic
Timely

These parameters apply to every area of our life, including personal development, health, and wellness. So while achieving a goal such as losing 10 pounds or regulating our blood sugar might be overwhelming, the breakdown into small steps helps us to focus and stick along the way.

“Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.”

Robert Lewis Stevenson

What makes a goal specific?

Specific means to define the goal as clearly as it gets. It would be best to write down what you want to achieve.

Ask yourself: WHAT do I want to attain? What am I looking for?

What makes a goal measurable?

Measurable could translate into lab values, waist-hip ratio, or macronutrient distribution. It could also refer to hours of sleep, meditation time, or exercise. A measurable goal could be eating a handful of leafy greens daily or drinking two liters of mineral water.

Ask yourself: WHY is the goal important to me?

What makes a goal achievable?

Achievable means that the goals should be doable and realistic for you. They should fit into your life and expand your comfort zone while still possible. Not too hard, not too easy.

Ask yourself: WHO will guide me? WHO will support me?

What makes a goal realistic?

Realistic implies that the goal matters to you and aligns with your inspirations.

Ask yourself: WHERE does the goal fit into your life? Where is it connected to my manifestation and inspiration?

What makes a goal timely?

Timely means you should have a timeframe to achieve your SMART goals.

Ask yourself: WHEN will it take place?

SMART goals are great for bringing structure and accountability into changes we long to apply. Small steps build up to outstanding achievements.
